Santa Teresa with Kids: Family Travel Guide
Santa Teresa works well for families when you keep the schedule simple. Surf, Isla Tortuga, bioluminescence, Montezuma, Curú and the Malpaís zipline can all fit a family trip, depending on the children and the conditions.

Yes, Santa Teresa works very well with kids
You can build a family trip around the beach and then add a few experiences that feel completely different. We would not try to fill every day. Kids usually enjoy the trip more when there is still time to swim, rest and do nothing.
The family activities we recommend most
Surf lesson
From age 5, children can take a surf lesson accompanied by an adult and the instructor. The instructor chooses the beach and lesson format according to the child's confidence and the ocean conditions that day.
Isla Tortuga
There is no minimum age for the Isla Tortuga tour. Children stay with their accompanying adult, who supervises them during the boat trip, the beach time and the activities.
Bioluminescence
There is no minimum age for the kayak or boat options, but children must be accompanied by an adult. The boat is the more relaxed choice for families, while kayak is more active.
Montezuma waterfalls
Easy to combine with time in Montezuma and Cabuya, and it gives kids something different from another beach day.
Curú Wildlife Refuge
One of our favorite family choices if wildlife and nature are important to you. It is an easy day trip from Santa Teresa, with short trails and good chances to see animals and birds.
Horseback riding
A child can join a gentle horseback ride with a parent when the child already has riding experience. Keep the route easy and adapted to the child.
ATV waterfall tour
For the Montezuma Waterfall ATV tour, passengers must be at least 5 years old. Drivers must be 18 or older and carry a valid driver's license.
Zipline in Malpaís
The zipline is in Malpaís, takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and accepts children from age 5.
Whale watching
Whale watching is seasonal, so we only recommend planning it when the operator confirms the season and current sightings.
Kids and the ocean
Children need an adult with them at all times near the water, with attention to currents even at the shoreline and when the surf is small. Read our beach safety guide and our general safety guide before the trip.
Where should a family stay?
It depends on the rhythm your family wants.
Playa Carmen is practical, central and easy for daily needs.
Central Santa Teresa is good if restaurants and activity are important.
Playa Hermosa is better if you want a quieter beach.
Other areas can also work very well if you have transport and want more space or nature.
Do families need a car?
Not always. Playa Carmen and central Santa Teresa can be easier without one. If you plan to explore Playa Hermosa, Manzanillo, Montezuma, Cabuya and several day trips, a car or other suitable transport makes life easier.
How we would plan the day
Beach or activity in the morning, lunch and rest during the hottest part of the day, then another outing or sunset later. It is simple and usually works better than trying to keep moving all day.
Why we recommend these experiences
We have done every tour on this list ourselves, and we keep working with an operator only after checking the guides and the service.
If you are deciding how much to fit in, see our Santa Teresa itinerary.
