The main thing we want you to remember

Santa Teresa is an open Pacific surf coast. The ocean is beautiful, but conditions can change quickly with swell, tide and currents.

If you are not sure, do not enter the water until you have asked a lifeguard. Ask about currents, rocks that may be hidden by the tide and where they recommend swimming that day.

Why asking a lifeguard matters

A section of beach can look calm from shore and still have hazards. Someone watching the ocean that day can give you much better advice than a general description online.

What if you are caught in a rip current?

Do not fight the current by trying to swim directly back to shore. Stay calm and conserve energy. If you can safely do so, swim along the shoreline to move out of the current. If you cannot get out, float or tread water and wave or call for help.

Do not attempt an untrained rescue

If someone else is in trouble, alert a lifeguard immediately. An untrained person entering the water can become a second person who needs rescue.

What about rocks?

Some rocks are covered at higher tide and exposed later. If you do not know the beach, ask before entering.

Our simple rule

If you are in doubt, stay out and ask. The conditions in front of you matter more than what the beach was like yesterday.
