Is Santa Teresa Good for Beginner Surfers?

Santa Teresa can be very good for beginner surfers when the beach sector and conditions are chosen correctly. First lessons start with technique on land and controlled whitewater practice, with the instructor adapting the session to swell, wind, tide and level.

Yes, but do not choose the beach from a list

Santa Teresa is a great place to learn, but the ocean changes every day. The beach that is perfect for a beginner today might not be the best choice tomorrow.

How we recommend doing your first lesson

Go with an instructor who can read the swell, tide and current that day. A good local instructor will choose the beach, and the exact section of it, based on the conditions that day.

Where do beginner lessons usually happen?

Playa Carmen, Mar Azul and other nearby spots can all work depending on conditions. Your instructor picks among them on the day.

How much does a lesson cost?

Lessons last 1.5 hours. Group lessons start at US$70 per person and private lessons at US$100. We also work with instructors in Playa Hermosa, and the exact beach and time are coordinated day by day according to conditions.

Do you need your own board?

No. Every lesson includes a bilingual instructor, surfboard, leash, wax, rashguard and medical insurance. Bring a swimsuit and sunscreen.

What happens in a lesson?

You start on the beach with a short talk about your level, ocean safety and basic technique. Then you go into the water with your instructor, who helps you catch waves and corrects you as you go. It ends back on shore with feedback and tips for practicing on your own.

What time is best?

The best time changes with swell, tide, wind and the beach. We prefer letting the instructor choose the time and exact section of beach for that day instead of booking around a fixed hour.

Where do beginners actually practice?

In the whitewater, which you find on practically every beach here. Paddling out to the lineup takes more experience and a read of the swell, tide and conditions, because the Pacific changes a lot from one day to the next.

Can beginners learn year round?

Yes, when conditions are suitable. Dry season often brings easier days, while green season can bring more swell. The instructor still makes the decision from the conditions that day.

Where can you rent a board?

There are several surf shops and rental points around Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen. For a first session, we would still start with a lesson because the board and basic equipment are already included.

What is the cancellation policy?

A deposit is required to confirm the reservation. The amount depends on the activity and is shown when you book. If you cancel at least 24 hours before the activity, you get 100% of your deposit back. If the operator cancels because of weather or sea conditions, the refund is 100%. In high season, book at least 15 days ahead.

Can children take surf lessons?

Yes. From age 5, children can take a surf lesson accompanied by an adult and the instructor. The instructor still chooses the beach, timing and lesson format according to the child's confidence and the ocean conditions that day.

Why we recommend the instructors we work with

We have done the surf lessons we recommend and know the local teams. If we have not checked the quality ourselves, we do not put it forward to travelers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience?

No. Lessons are available for complete beginners.

Do I need to know which beach to book?

No. Let the instructor choose the safest and most useful spot for that day.

What to expect from your first surf lesson

No previous experience is required. Before entering the water, the instructor explains body position, how to stand up, basic ocean timing and whether your natural stance is regular or goofy. Beginners can start in the first line of whitewater to learn balance, posture and board control before progressing farther out.

What is the best time for a beginner lesson?

Mornings often have lighter wind, and late afternoon can also work well. The instructor checks swell, wind, tide and student level rather than using the same beach and time every day.

What equipment is included?

The lessons we offer include an appropriate surfboard, leash, wax and rash guard, so you do not need a separate board rental.

How long is a lesson?

About 90 minutes, including the initial beach explanation and supervised practice in the water.

How much supervision is there?

Our group lessons are limited to a maximum of three students per instructor, which keeps supervision close and personalized.
