The simple answer

There is no single best season. The right time depends on whether you care most about dry weather, green landscapes, fewer people or lower prices.

We live here year round, so this is how we normally explain the seasons to friends coming to visit.

December to April: dry season

This is the easiest period if sunshine and beach days are your priority. Roads are usually simpler, the beachfront is busy and this is the main high season.

It is also the time when accommodation and popular experiences can book earlier, so if you already know your dates, do not leave everything to the last minute.

May to July: the beginning of green season

The landscape changes quickly and everything becomes greener. There are usually fewer visitors than in peak season, and many days still begin bright before clouds or rain arrive later.

This is a good period if you want a little more space.

August to October: rainier and very green

This is the wettest stretch of the year. It can be a great time for travelers who like lush nature, slower days and better value, but you should plan with more flexibility.

On a rainy day you can still do yoga, a spa session, cafés, shopping, coworking or the gym, and even bioluminescence in light rain when conditions are suitable.

November: transition

November is one of those months that can feel different from week to week. The rain begins to ease, there are fewer people than in peak season and prices can still be friendlier than later in December.

When is whale season?

Humpback whales pass along this coast with their calves in September, October and November. Whale watching trips only run in those three months.

Does the town close in September and October?

Some businesses close for a few weeks, but around 80% keep operating normally.

Sunrise, sunset and surf

Sunrise is around 5:00 to 5:30 AM and sunset around 5:50 to 6:00 PM, with small changes through the year. There are waves all year, and the start of green season usually brings bigger ones.

Does it rain all day in green season?

Usually not. There are days of full rain, but a common pattern is a brighter morning with clouds or rain later in the afternoon or evening. Weather still changes from day to day, so we keep plans flexible.

What we would choose

If it is your first trip and you want the easiest possible version of Santa Teresa, dry season is simple. If you care more about greenery, fewer people and a slower rhythm, green season can be beautiful.

We would not skip Santa Teresa in rainy season. We would leave more room in the plan.
