Yes, but where you stay changes everything

Playa Carmen and central Santa Teresa are the easiest areas if you want to walk. We move around this corridor all the time, and choosing the right accommodation can save you from renting a vehicle for every small trip.

Playa Carmen to central Santa Teresa

From the Playa Carmen crossroads to central Santa Teresa is about 20 minutes on foot, and it is one of the easiest stretches to walk. You have restaurants, cafés and shops along the main road, and at low tide the beach can be a nicer way to cover part of the route.

What about Malpaís?

You can walk between parts of Malpaís, Playa Carmen and Santa Teresa. The road is paved and has space for pedestrians, but the distance adds up. A place can technically be walkable and still feel far when it is hot, raining or late at night.

Playa Hermosa, Manzanillo and Cabuya

If you stay in these areas and want to explore beyond your immediate neighborhood, we recommend having transport. An ATV is common, a motorcycle can work for experienced riders, and a car or UTV can make more sense for groups.

What about bicycles?

There are bicycle rental points around Santa Teresa, including hourly options. They are an economical way to move between Santa Teresa, Playa Carmen and Malpaís, but remember that the heat can make a short ride feel longer than it looks on a map.

Walking at night

Central areas are generally manageable, but lighting is limited in some sections. If you are walking on the beach after dark, we prefer doing it with someone.

If you want a trip without a car

Choose your location first and your hotel second. A beautiful room on a steep hill gets old fast when every coffee or dinner requires transport.
