ATV, UTV or Car in Santa Teresa: Which One Fits Your Trip?
Choose a car for comfort and longer drives, a 4x4 for rain or rough access, an ATV for local exploring, and a UTV when a group wants more space. Your accommodation location should be the first deciding factor.

Start with how you will use it
We use cars and motorcycles ourselves around the area. The right choice depends on where you are staying, how many people you are, how much luggage you have and what season you are visiting.
Car
A regular car is the easiest option for comfort, luggage and longer drives. In dry season it is enough for most normal routes around the area.
4x4
A 4x4 gives you more flexibility in rainy season, on hillside access and on rough secondary roads. You do not need one for every trip to Santa Teresa.
ATV
An ATV is one of the most common local choices. It is fun, easy to park and practical for moving between nearby beaches and towns. The tradeoff is less protection from rain, dust and sun, and very little luggage space.
UTV
A UTV makes more sense for small groups who want an open vehicle but need more seats and space than an ATV.
Motorcycle
A motorcycle can be a simple and economical option for experienced riders, especially in dry season. We would not make it your first choice if you are not already comfortable riding.
Bicycle
Bicycles are available from several rental points, including hourly rentals. They work best for shorter trips between Santa Teresa, Playa Carmen and Malpaís if you are comfortable with the heat.
What do you need to rent?
For ATVs, UTVs, motorcycles and other motorized rental vehicles, the driver must be at least 18 years old and carry a valid driver's license plus a passport or other accepted identification. A security deposit is also required when you rent the vehicle.
For ATVs and motorcycles, use the helmet provided by the rental company. ATVs normally carry a maximum of two people.
ATVs, UTVs and motorcycles are widely available around town, and many ATVs have surfboard racks.
Can you rent at the airport and return near Santa Teresa?
Some rental companies offer one way rentals between San José or Liberia and the Santa Teresa area. Availability and one way fees vary, so confirm the exact return location before booking.
What we would choose
For two people staying centrally and exploring nearby, an ATV can be very convenient. For a family or group with luggage, a car or UTV usually makes more sense. For rainy season or difficult access, we lean toward a 4x4 or ATV.
