You do not need to overthink money here

Cards are accepted in most established businesses, and both Costa Rican colones and U.S. dollars are commonly used. We still carry some cash because it is useful for small purchases and local transport.

Should you use colones or dollars?

Both work. For small everyday expenses, colones are convenient. If you pay in dollars, change often comes back in colones and the exchange rate can vary by business.

Are credit cards accepted?

Yes, in most restaurants, cafés, shops and established businesses.

Where are the banks and ATMs?

Banco Nacional has a branch in Playa Carmen, at the main crossroads, open Monday to Friday from 10:10 AM to 5:30 PM. Banco Nacional in Cóbano is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:20 PM.

LAFISE has a Santa Teresa branch at Wave Boutique Mall, opposite Hotel Plaza Cielo. Its current hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

There are also ATMs around the Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen commercial areas. An ATM being there does not mean the branch is open, so for teller services go by the hours above.

Can you exchange money?

Yes. Banks can exchange U.S. dollars and euros into colones.

Taxes, service and tipping

The 13% sales tax is normally already included in the price you see. Restaurants and cafés add a 10% service charge to the bill. Any tip beyond that is voluntary: nobody expects it, and it is appreciated.

How much cash should you carry?

We would not carry the whole trip budget. Use cards for larger expenses and keep enough cash for taxis, small purchases and places where cash is easier.

Bring good bills

Damaged, marked or heavily worn U.S. dollar bills can be rejected. Smaller denominations are much easier for day to day spending than very large bills. Do not expect a US$100 bill to be accepted for a small purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Should I bring only cash?

No. A mix of card and some cash is the easiest option.

Can I pay with U.S. dollars?

Yes, many businesses accept them.

Do I need to tip in restaurants?

No. The bill already includes 13% tax and 10% service, and anything extra is up to you.

Can I exchange euros?

Yes, through banks.
